No Free in Freelance: A beginner's guide to journalism

This half-day workshop will cover all the basics needed to start a successful career as a freelance journalist, including:

How to find your voice

How to generate ideas, pitch them, and get published

How to get paid for your writing and maximize your earnings

Participants will also have a chance to talk through their writing ideas and receive feedback from the facilitator.

To attend, please send a short cover letter to progs@capitalsqua.re explaining why you want to join the class and how it would be useful for you. Please also attach a writing sample of your previous work. We'll contact you if you've been selected.

Please Note:

This workshop is for aspiring and beginner journalists and freelancers ONLY. It will be free to attend, however, there are only 15 seats available. Class begins at 10:00 am, with breakfast and networking from 9:00 am. Lunch will also be served.

Speaker Profile:

Ayodeji Rotinwa is the Deputy Editor of pan-African news platform, African Arguments. He is also an essayist and critic. He covers visual art & culture, social justice, innovation, sustainable development across West Africa, and increasingly elsewhere. His work often seeks to explore the intersections between these topics. He has been published widely in print and online media, in titles such as New York Times, Financial Times, CNN, Art Forum, Harper’s Bazaar Arabia, World Politics Review, The Africa Report, amongst other outlets. In 2015, he was selected for the Farafina Creative Writing Workshop held and mentored by award-winning author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie. He is a 2017 BudgIT Data and Investigative Journalism Fellow.

OTHER THINGS TO NOTE:

Driving Directions: From Dolphin Gate (from Ikoyi), turn left at Corporation Drive, then take the second right turn onto Ikorodu Crescent. Keep a look out on your right for number 225b

Bus Directions: Take a bus to Obalende - alight at Obalende bus stop, then take a short walk to Ijeh, where you board a Keke NAPEP to Dolphin Estate. Alight from the Keke at the final stop and board a Dolphin estate shuttle. Be sure to inform the driver that your stop is 225 Ikorodu crescent.

Parking: There's roadside parking available on the street.

Security: CapitalSquare is pretty safe, but we're having an open event, so it's best you keep an eye on your belongings
